I love peanut butter. I mean I really, really love peanut butter. In fact it’s more than a bit of a crisis when we run out of peanut butter. So when I heard there was a Peanut Butter plant, I knew I was going to love it. And boy, do I! Melianthus major is quite simply an exquisite plant. With such glorious foliage and an impressive stature in the garden, it’s hard not to love this plant. Now the name, ‘Peanut Butter” plant comes from the quaint notion that bruising or breaking a leaf makes the plant emit a peanut butter-like fragrance. Or odor—depends on whom you ask. I think it’s a stretch to call the fragrance peanut butter, but there’s really no need to argue about such silliness. Just get out and enjoy this plant!
